### Why legal intake maturity matters

Legal teams are expected to support more of the business, often without a corresponding increase in resources. Requests arrive through email, Slack, Teams and conversations, each requiring different levels of attention.

How those requests are handled affects turnaround times, team capacity and the business's experience of Legal. As demand grows, the question becomes how much of the process can be managed consistently and how much work can be completed without adding to lawyers' workloads.

### How legal teams manage incoming requests

The first three levels of intake maturity focus on capturing and managing demand.

- **Ad hoc intake** is where requests arrive through individual inboxes, messages and informal conversations. Lawyers manage their own workloads, making it difficult to track requests across the team.
- **Centralized intake** brings requests into one place, giving Legal a shared view of incoming demand.
- **Managed intake** adds ownership, prioritization and status tracking, so the team can see who is responsible and how work is progressing.

Each level improves visibility and coordination, although much of the process still depends on manual effort.
